How to Play Playground Checkers?

Objective:

Be the first team to remove all of the other team’s players (pieces) from the board.

Setup:
  • Split into two teams, one for each side of the board.
  • If there are fewer than 8 children per side, fill as many spots as possible in the first row of each side. If teams are uneven, add a helper, or let some kids play two pieces and switch after each turn.
  • Each player stands in a square to become a “piece” for their team.
How to Move
  • Teams take turns moving.
  • On your turn, one player (piece) moves forward diagonally to an empty square.
  • Players can only move forward (unless they become a King).
How to Capture
  • If an opponent’s player is in a square diagonally in front of you, and the next square beyond them is empty, you can “jump” over that player.
  • The “jumped” player leaves the board (they are out).
  • If possible, a player may make multiple jumps in one turn.
How to Become a King
  • When a player reaches the opposite end of the board, they become a King.
  • Kings can move and jump both forward and backward.
Winning the Game
  • The game ends when a team has no more players left or cannot make a move.
  • The team with players remaining wins!
Ground Rules
  • Take turns—no rushing!
  • Only one move per turn (unless making multiple jumps).
  • If you’re “jumped,” step off the board and cheer on your team.
  • Play fair and be kind, everyone should get a chance to play.
  • If you have more children than spaces, rotate players each round so everyone can join in.
Tip:

For larger groups, play mini-games or tournaments so everyone gets a turn to be a checker!
